Below Knee Suspension Socket

Locking Suspension Socket

A Base Lock Suspension Socket is a modern below-knee prosthetic socket system designed to provide secure suspension, comfort, and easy usage for transtibial amputees. This system uses a silicone or gel locking liner with a distal pin that locks into a shuttle lock mechanism placed at the bottom base of the prosthetic socket.

Features

  • Secure pin locking suspension system
  • Easy donning and doffing
  • Comfortable silicone/gel liner interface
  • Improved stability during walking
  • Durable and reliable mechanism
  • Suitable for daily functional use

Benefits

  • Enhances patient confidence and mobility
  • Reduces accidental prosthesis slipping
  • Provides better prosthetic control
  • Comfortable fit with cushioning liners
  • Simple maintenance and easy handling

Ideal For

  • Below-knee amputees
  • Long and medium residual limbs
  • Low to moderate activity users
  • First-time prosthetic patients
  • Elderly users needing secure suspension

Disadvantages

  • Pistoning may occur in long-term use
  • Distal traction can cause skin issues
  • Less suitable for very short residual limbs
  • Lock maintenance required periodically

Passive Vacuum Suspension Socket

A Passive Vacuum Socket is an advanced below-knee prosthetic suspension system that uses a one-way expulsion valve to create vacuum pressure between the residual limb, liner, and socket. This vacuum helps maintain a secure fit by reducing air inside the socket during walking and movement.

Features

  • One-way vacuum valve system
  • Secure suction suspension
  • Reduced pistoning movement
  • Better socket fit and limb control
  • Improved comfort and proprioception
  • Lightweight and low-maintenance design

Benefits

  • Enhances prosthetic stability
  • Helps maintain residual limb volume
  • Reduces friction and skin movement
  • Improves walking confidence and gait
  • Provides intimate socket fit
  • Better energy transfer during ambulation

Suitable For

  • Below-knee amputees
  • Moderate to high activity users
  • Patients requiring improved suspension
  • Users with stable residual limb volume
  • Individuals seeking enhanced comfort and control

Disadvantages

  • Higher cost than normal suspension systems
  • Needs proper sealing for good suspension
  • Slightly difficult to wear and remove
  • Sweat may reduce comfort in hot weather
  • Not suitable for all residual limb conditions
  • Need to use Vacuum Machine for Casting.

Active Vacuum Suspension Socket

An Active Vacuum Socket is an advanced below-knee prosthetic suspension system that uses a mechanical or electronic pump to actively create vacuum pressure between the residual limb and the socket. This continuous vacuum provides a highly secure fit, improved limb stability, and enhanced comfort during walking and daily activities.

Features

  • Mechanical or electronic vacuum pump
  • Continuous active suction suspension
  • Strong and secure socket fit
  • Reduced pistoning movement
  • Improved residual limb volume management
  • Enhanced comfort and proprioception

Benefits

  • Excellent suspension and stability
  • Better gait control and balance
  • Improved comfort for long-term wear
  • Reduced skin movement and friction
  • Helps maintain healthy residual limb volume
  • Increased confidence during walking

Suitable

  • Below-knee amputees
  • Moderate to high activity users
  • Active lifestyle patients
  • Users requiring maximum suspension control
  • Patients with stable skin condition

Disadvantages

  • Higher cost compared to traditional systems.
  • Requires regular maintenance.
  • Not suitable for all residual limb conditions.
  • Need to use Vacuum Machine for Casting.
